How to Season a New Copper or Brass Vessel Before First Use
Share
Why Seasoning Matters
When you receive a new copper or brass vessel, it needs proper preparation before first use. This process removes manufacturing residues, checks the Kalai (tin-lining) integrity, and prepares the metal surface for optimal performance.
For Copper Drinkware (Bottles, Glasses, Jugs)
- Rinse with plain water to remove any dust
- Make a paste of lemon juice and salt
- Rub the paste on the inside and outside of the vessel
- Let it sit for 5-10 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water
- Fill with water and let it sit for 4-6 hours before first use
- Discard this first batch of water and refill for Tamra Jal
For Brass Cookware (Kadhai, Handi, Tawa)
- Check the Kalai - Ensure the tin lining is even and complete on the cooking surface
- Wash with warm water and mild soap
- Boil water in the vessel for 10-15 minutes and discard
- Apply a thin layer of cooking oil on the Kalai surface
- Heat gently on low flame for 2-3 minutes
- Cool and wipe with a soft cloth
- Your vessel is now ready for cooking
For Brass Temple Items (Diyas, Kalash, Idols)
- Wash with warm water and mild soap
- Polish with brass cleaner or lemon-salt paste for a bright shine
- Rinse and dry completely
- Ready for use in your pooja
